Green Aruba is a platform to deliver premium informational experience on how to reach full sustainability, through best practices and innovations. Today it represents much more than just a catalyst for knowledge sharing or a platform to discuss the latest innovations.

Green Aruba has also become a moment for collective reflection on where we stand and how we can help each other to get where we want to go. It is from this perspective that this conference goes beyond technology, financials and even environment.

Conference History

The Development of Green Aruba Conferences


Al Gore Former U.S. Vice President

Aruba started its Journey in 2009 and highlighted its commitments with the first annual Green Aruba Conference in 2010, with the theme " Our Future with Green Energy". Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore as the keynote speaker elaborated on the topic "Aruba is ready as a small nation to lead the way". Since then Aruba's vision has spread to the region and the world.


Willem-Alexander His Majesty The King of the Netherlands

In 2011 Aruba organized a three-day conference with the theme "The Green Gateway" with Sub-themes such as, Green Energy for Small Island Countries, The Future of Green Energy and Green Finance. His Majesty King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands was present as the conference keynote speaker.


Richard Branson English businessman and investor

In 2012 at the Rio+20 conference Sir Richard Branson and the Prime Minister of Aruba Mr. Mike Eman announced a partnership with Carbon War Room (CWR) to transition the island to 100% renewable energy.

Wubbo Ockels Dutch physicist and Astronaut

At the Green Aruba 2012 Conference "Smart & Sustainable – Alternative Energy" Dutch, American, Regional and other international experts on wind, solar and maritime energy technologies were invited to the island to share their knowledge of new and proven technologies in these fields. Dutch Physicist and Former ESA Scientist Astronaut, Prof. dr. Wubbo Ockels was present as the conference keynote speaker and co-founder of "Happy Energy". "Happy Energy" is an organization that inspires society in a positive way to create a livable world.


José María Figueres Former President of Costa Rica

The Green Aruba conference "Our Road to 2020" partnered in 2013 with the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF), the region's largest gathering of regional and international energy stakeholders with Former President of Costa Rica, and President of Carbon War Room Mr. Jose Maria Figueres as keynote speaker.


Fabien Cousteau

In 2014 for the first time, the Green Aruba Conference and the Europe Meets the Americas Conference were combined into one gathering (GA- EMA) with the theme "Green Aruba where Europe Meets the Americas". The aim of the conference was to attract companies, government officials and investors from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean region. The focus of GA-EMA was on four sustainable solutions: Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Technology, Sustainable Infrastructure and Sustainable Tourism. Mr. Fabien Cousteau was the keynote speaker of the conference and spoke about "Nature is a Business, Today and Tomorrow".

Jan Peter Balkenende Former Prime Minister of the Netherlands

Former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Jan Peter Balkenende was also present as a conference speaker and shared information on how the "Green Gateway offers prospect for Aruba".


Luis Almagro Lemes Ban Ki-moon Egbert L. J. Perry


In 2015 Green Aruba, in collaboration with the Clinton Climate Initiative and the Carbon War Room - Rocky Mountain Institute hosted the Aruba Learning Event (ALE). The goal of the ALE was to accelerate learning and gain insights by sharing regional experience and best practices from RE implementation throughout the Caribbean and other island nations. Together with this collaboration Green Aruba hosted a two day conference with over 400 delegates from 42 different nations. Green Aruba had the honor to receive a video message from the Former President of the United States of America Bill Clinton and a letter addressed by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon. In addition, Mr. Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States was present as the opening keynote speaker while the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Integral Group LLC, Mr. Egbert Perry as the closing speaker. In total more than 30 speakers, panelist and moderators, presented their views on the main theme of "Shared Sustainability".


Maria van der Hoeven Greg Callman


In 2016 Green Aruba opened the theme 'Transformation to a Sustainable Energy Mix' with Maria van der Hoeven from the Clingendael International Energy Programme. During the conference exciting topics were covered from crowd funding opportunities to the latest challenges of renewable integration where storage systems are opening new doors. Greg Callman from TESLA was the closing keynote speaker, who emphasized that technology in itself is not the objective, but the right partnerships to tackle the energy challenges. Also, in the same week Green Aruba facilitated the Center of Excellence to bring over 30 SIDS from around the world together for workshops in Aruba on their future towards sustainable energy.


Paul de Krom


The eight Green Aruba conference was organized in collaboration with the leading association of electric utilities and industry partners in the Caribbean (CARILEC) and focused on the theme 'Sustainability in Motion'. The two-day program, opened by first speaker Mr. Paul de Krom, CEO of TNO, was divided into four main topics: policy, finance & economics, technology and environment. An overarching theme within the program of the conference was 'stakeholder alignment'.

During the conference Green Aruba organized an auction of local made art of which the total amount of $35.000 went to CARILEC's program for disaster relief and electricity restoration. This to help the neighbor islands in need, after they got struck by different hurricanes.
